Gutters aren't standard on all homes. Specific precautions
should be taken or problems are inevitable.
•
Nothing looks worse than a gutter that's askew. To avoid
this, proper measurements are a must. Some slope is
necessary so water flows to downspouts. Slope is not
always possible so the proper amount of downspouts are
vital.
•
The size and frequency of downspouts are determined by
the area and steepness of the roof. As a general rule, for
every 100 sq. ft. of roof area, 1" is added to the diameter
of the downspout. A 3" diameter downspout can carry
rainfall from 300 sq. ft. of roof. Downspouts should be
spaced a maximum of 40' apart to prevent water from
backing up.

Keep
your gutters clean! If water can't flow out, it backs up
and causes damage. Clean your gutters every spring and
fall. Use a garden hose, child's rake, rubber spatula, or your
fingers to flush the troughs clean. Flush out the downspouts,
if they are clogged use a plumber's snake.
