WACH FOX SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR!

“The tennis standout was shocked to learn she is the recipient of the WACH Fox scholar athlete of the year scholarship, but her coach saw this kind of recognition coming.

“We’re extremely proud of her,” said Irmo tennis head coach Mark DiMaggio. “She’s just a wonderful, wonderful student-athlete. We’re just honored that she was with us for six years.”

Cherukumalli has been playing for the Yellowjackets since the seventh grade, embracing tough competition while also reflection her grit and hard work.

“Tennis is definitely a very big part of my life,” said Cherukumalli. “Like from August to October during the school year it’s school, then tennis for like 3-4 hours every night. So it’s definitely hard managing that and schoolwork.”

As a student athlete Cherukumalli has become an expert at the balancing act, but now all her focus will be on furthering her education, something the big check can help with.

“Definitely college, I don’t know where I’m going yet but I know it’s going to be expensive,” said Cherukumalli

Cherukumalli plans to major in finance.

“I got into USC and I got into the honors college too so that’s definitely on the top of my list,” said Cherukumalli.

No matter what she decides, Cherukumalli said this kind of recognition won’t be forgotten.

“It shows hard work is worth it and I’m definitely looking forward to doing that in the future in college,” said Cherukumalli.

A mindset DiMaggio hopes rubs off on the rest of the team.

“It really is a motivational thing for them to aspire to get to such a level,” said DiMaggio.”
